SKA station cost comparison

چکیده

Introduction Current SKA white papers and updates present cost in a variety of ways which makes direct comparisons difficult. To a first approximation the major difference between the proposals is the cost of the antenna stations. These costs have been extracted from the white papers and updates and an attempt has been made to bring them all to a common metric: cost per square metre of physical collecting area.

Memo 99 Aperture Array Cooling Simulation and Costing Model

Executive Summary In this report we show that a distributed cooling system delivering liquid coolant to all the front-end LNAs of an SKA mid-frequency aperture array station is not only practicable but can also be implemented in an economically beneficial way. The aperture array configuration can be adjusted to either deliver an overall cost saving or conversely produce a sensitivity improvemen...

SKA Survey Optimization

In this study we examine the science and engineering issues involved in optimizing the SKA for survey science. Three Key Science projects require all-sky or 1000 sq deg surveys. Survey science requires low frequency, low resolution images with superb image quality, which imposes stringent requirements on the calibration and sidelobe levels at every stage of beam formation. The cost of data proc...

RFI Identification and Mitigation Using Simultaneous Dual Station Observations

RFI mitigation is a critically important issue in radio astronomy using existing instruments as well as in the development of next-generation radio telescopes, such as the Square Kilometer Array (SKA). Most designs for the SKA involve multiple stations with spacings of up to a few thousands of kilometers and thus can exploit the drastically different RFI environments at different stations. As d...

THE SCIENCE CASE FOR MIRANdA

The future of radio astronomy lies with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a telescope currently in the planning stage and expected to be operational in 2020. Much of the Key Science for the SKA calls for a fast survey speed at observing frequencies around 1 GHz. MIRANdA is an SKA demonstrator which achieves a fast survey speed through a combination of medium sized parabolic dishes equipped with...

Analyzing LOFAR station processing on multi-core platforms

The LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) is a phasedarray radio telescope in the Netherlands. Currently, the astronomical community is embarking upon designing a new telescope, the Square Kilometer Array (SKA). As many of the LOFAR techniques form the basis for several SKA modes of operation, a retrospective analysis of LOFAR, reviewing its design given recent advances in technology, is of interest. Thi...
